Pop ads
A pop ad opens an advertiser's page in a new browser tab when a visitor clicks on your site. Your page stays open in the original tab. Visitors don't need to subscribe or allow anything, and pop ads are off by default — you decide whether to use them.
How it works
When pop ads are on, the next qualifying click on your page opens a new tab with an ad. If no ad is available at that moment, the new tab goes to your No-fill URL instead, so the click is never wasted on an empty page.
To keep the experience reasonable, each visitor sees at most one pop within the time you set. The count is remembered in the visitor's browser for as long as you choose.
Set it up
- Go to Placements and click Edit on your placement. (For a brand-new placement, save it first — pop ads can only be set up on an existing placement.)
- Open the Ad formats tab and choose Pop ads.
- Turn on Enable pop ads.
- Choose the Feed that serves your pop ads.
- Enter a No-fill URL — the page visitors land on when no ad is available. It must start with
https://. - Adjust the optional settings below, then click Save changes.
Settings explained
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Feed | The ad source that supplies pop ads for this placement. Required. |
| No-fill URL | Where the new tab goes when there's no ad. Required. |
| Trigger | Which clicks open a pop. Links only — recommended is the default. Opening pops on any click, including blank space, can only be enabled by your account manager. |
| Sub ID | Optional traffic-source label sent with every pop ad request and used in your reports. Empty = the page's domain. See Traffic sources. |
| Keywords | Optional, comma-separated. Up to three are used to pick relevant ads. |
| Time between pops | One visitor sees at most one pop per this many seconds. |
| Counter lifetime | How long (in hours) a visitor's pop counter is remembered in their browser. |
Good to know
- Off by default: new placements never show pop ads until you turn them on.
- The limit lives in the visitor's browser: if someone clears their cookies, their counter starts over.
- Popup blockers: some browsers or extensions block new tabs. Those clicks simply don't open a pop.
- Web only: pop ads aren't available for Android app placements.
- Your pop results appear in reports as Pops filled and Pop rev.
