Traffic sources (subid)

A subid is a short label for a traffic source — for example newsletter or campaign-a. Every ad request carries one, so results can be compared side by side in your reports and you can see which sources perform best.

Where subids come from

Each ad format has its own optional Sub ID setting on the placement:

  • Push notifications: Send rules tab.
  • In-page notifications: Inpage push tab.
  • Pop ads: Pop ads tab.

If you leave a Sub ID empty, results from that format are labeled with the domain the request came from — the page a visitor is on for in-page and pop ads, or your site's domain for push (for example news.example.com). So every result has a traffic source, even if you never set one.

See the results

  1. Go to Reportings.
  2. Pick a placement (or All placements) and a date range.
  3. Open the By subid tab.

Each row is one subid, with the same columns as the other breakdowns: Displayed, Clicks, CTR, Est. revenue, Est. RPM and Avg bid. Results recorded before subids were added to every request are grouped under (none). See What your report numbers mean for what each column means.

Good to know

  • Sub IDs are optional — leave them empty and your domain is used.
  • Keep labels short and simple: letters, numbers, ., - and _, up to 50 characters. A domain such as news.example.com is a valid label.
  • Android app placements have no page domain, so set an explicit Sub ID for push there.
  • Want to track individual clicks rather than sources? Use click-ID pass-through.
